How To Learn A Language By Watching TV

Tv isn't just for entertaining! You can also use it to learn a language! Try this....
Every time you order or watch a movie or program try to use subtitles. Just about every DVD has an option to select subtitles. If your movie has an option to view the subtitles in your targeted language..let's say Spanish for example..then watch them in Spanish.

I think it is great to watch movies in English while viewing the subtitles in another language. In this way you can learn and pick out news words and expressions in that language. This helps your reading and also your comprehension skills. This works even better with movies that you have already seen before also perhaps more than once. Being that you already familiar with the word contents in English and scenes, now the next time seeing the movie you will be focusing more on the new language.

You could do the same by viewing the movie in (example Spanish) the language and then have the subtitles in English to now focus on hearing the Spanish equivalents of the English. This method is simple and fun because you will doing something that you already like to do and that is  - watching tv! However, at the same time you will be learning new things simultaneously! You know kids do this all day day long and more so being unconscious of the fact. They have programs like Dora the Explorer which deliver words in both Spanish and English. Kids absorb these entertaining themes everyday and never forget what they learn. My 5 year old niece loves this cartoon and has already learned some Spanish words.

So watching tv is great and even better when you use it to your advantage to help you learn your targeted language. If not movies, try to see if you cable company has special packages that offer channels in your targeted language. Most companies do and it can be reasonable depending on how many channels you select. Sometimes you can even streamline or get international channels directly from other countries live. Try to find at least one station that you can watch (Ex Univision, Telemundo, etc) that you can use to help you find tune your ears and get more exposure to the language.

Which foreign languages are the easiest to learn for beginners?

Did you know that are more than 6,000 languages spoken worldwide? According to the Linguistics Society of America, they placed it at around 6,800 languages. That's a very impressive statistic would you say? No doubt! But with all of these languages, which are the easiest to learn for beginners?

Some might argue that English is the easiest language to learn. Others perhaps with side the Latin-based one such Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese just to name a few. But, what do you think?

I could be wrong but I personally think that it is easier to learn any Latin-based language for most beginners. Why do I say this? Well, for the obvious. All of them are corelated and follow a simple grammatical structure which basically repeats itself. The only difference is a slight (not drastic) change or variation in the pronouciation of words.

One of the benefits of learning any of these is that once the beginner learns one of them, the rest are a piece of cake. A learner can establish a simple system for learning new ones once he understands and masters one. I liken it to a person learning to cook. You can take one dish that everyone loves and then personalize it and put your own spin to it. The same ingredients are used, however, this time the cook changes slighly the recipe.

Latin-based are easy to learn and great because on many occasions you can speak with others using one language and they can understand you although it's not there mother tongue. For example, let's say that I am French and speak to someone who is Italian. Due to the very close similarities in our languages, we can understand each other and communicate.

So if you learn one Latin-based language, it will far easier for you to learn another in a very short time. I can definitely relate to this because I was able to learn Spanish in this same fashion. Don't get me wrong, I did have to work hard and study the language. Something that I noticed was that many of the Spanish words when reading them were just like French. There was only a slight variation in pronouciation. That helped to speed up the learning process.

The point that I would like to arrive at is that learning any language will some lots of time, energy and real work. It doesn't matter whether it's considered one of the easiest languages to learn or of the hardest. All languages will present some challenges. The idea is to NEVER give up and keep going at it because before long you will expreience the benefits of speaking another language!

Is There Really A Secret To Learning A Language?

If you are learning a language or deciding which language to learn, maybe you have wondered if there really is a secret to doing it. I have seen tons of websites and videos online that claim to have a SECRET to learning  a language. This video below explains and gives my point of view on this matter as a linguist. It explains what it really takes to learn a language and really become more proficient at it.

How To Learn A Language By Using Social Media Networking Like Facebook And Twitter

Social media networking sites have literally changed the way people today communicate and conduct business. Everybody likes to chat and keep in touch with friends and family with social media. Social media has made possible the impossible. Although most use it to receive general updates from friends and family, this cool social platform could also be used to learn a language. How?

Facebook and Twitter share many commonalities:

1) Language settings
2) Like and following capability
3) Online chatting functions

Let talk first about the language settings and how these can help you to learn a language. When you first set your pages, you had the option of setting your language preference. This will deliver all updates in that language. Now, you can change this setting to that language that you want to learn. By doing this, you will now receive updates in that language which will expose now to new words and expressions. The more you see them, the more you will remember them and commit them to memory.

The Like and Following Functions:
With these of course, when you like someone's page (FB) or follow them (Twitter), you will now receive automatically updates or news this person posts online. Now, the thing that you want to do to learn a language is search for people, groups, or programs to like or follow. You can then receive their updates.

The cool thing is that if you like or follow let's say for example "Digitaldialects" this page will send language learning tips that will help you. You can do the same for any other language learning programs that have pages. The idea is to follow and get updates from people that speak and teach the language that you are targeting.

Some of these very programs with pages offer free lessons in those languages that you get to your feeds. This means you learn on the go. Now, the frequency of the updates and how diligent you are in practicing what you learn will determine of course your progress.

The Chatting Functions:
These are great to help you to learn a language. You can chat live with native speakers of your targeted language and teach each other. You can give the person free lessons in English in exchange for free lessons in their language. This way you both benefit. You can practically log on anytime the others are online and teach each other.  You can answers to questions you might instantly with these chatting features.

I personally like Skype because it's free and you can also chat with others and see them as you communicate.  You can use in addition to Twitter and Facebook. Although it isn't the fastest way to learn a language, it is another very effective means to learn. The point is that social media networking platforms have benefits that many have already capitalized on. Why not take advantage of these also and use them to your advantage to help you learn a language?

Can You Really Learn A Language While You Sleep?

Can a person really learn a language while sleeping?
This is a question worth investigating because many believe that it is impossible to do it. But think about this..

People say sometimes that what comes into one ear just goes out of the other. Is this really true? Not for certain.

People today watch television for hours and sometimes all day long without interruption. Some even play music while sleeping and then remember tunes. Why is this?

Some studies suggest that although the brain is supposedly resting or cut off, it is still possible for a person to learn (studies with Harvard, ScienceDaily ). These studies refer to what is called "sleep learning" (see here).

Sometimes while asleep, many people sense things and are still slightly alert to their surroundings. This is sometimes the case for example if the tv is lefted on all night long or music is playing. Sometimes a person will wake up and then "recall" words or even expressions that were aired on tv.  This proves then that not everything that goes into one ear comes out of the other, something sticks to the brain.

Applying this same prinicipal, it seems logical that a person CAN learn a language in their sleep. Of course, how much will probably depend on many other factors yet to be determined. However, by reviewing the studies mentioned above by Harvard & ScienceDaily you will see that it is still possible to learn many words or even expression while asleep.

What You Can Do To Learn

Just like a mother who sings to her unborn child in the womb, you can also listen to music or audios tapes of your targeted language while you sleep. If you listen to perhaps the sames audios each and everyday, the brain will grab and digest more bits and pieces of the language overtime. Now, of course this is not the best method nor the fastest way to learn a language, however, this is a little somthing that you can do to help you to learn more of your goal language with time.

What Is The Absolute Fastest Way To Learn A Language?

Have you ever wondered why mere kids can learn how to sing complete songs even if they don't know how to read yet? This is something that I see just about everyday. The reason why is simple. Kids just like adults learn things that they really want to learn by having constant exposure to it. The same is true to learn a language.

Many say that traveling to a country where the people speak your targeted language is the absolute fastest way to learn a language. Well, it is true that you will get constant exposure all day long to a language by living in the country. You could probably learn a language at very excelerated rate because now you are forced to learn a language versus sticking to a schedule or sticking to a specific schedule.

But is it really practical to travel to a country to learn a language? Is it really the fastest way to learn a language? It is the fastest way in my opinion, however, not the most practical way. Why? Well, for the obvious. Most people can't afford to get up and go to a country for an unlimited or undetermined amount of time with this goal in mind. Unless you are already rich and have no need to come back to a job or simply don't have enough funds saved up, then this option to travel might not be the best route to go.

Although highly effective, and probably the absolute fastest way to learn a language, this step will involve for most lots of planification and determination to realized this goal. It makes me think of a nurse who wanted to learn Spanish to better assist Spanish-speaking clients here in the states. She traveled to Mexico with the goal of staying for 8 weeks. Now keep in mind that she did have some limited study of the language prior to moving to Mexico. After her trip, she returned with a far greater knowledge of the Spanish language and spoke it very fluently. Now this experience I must say it not typical. This is not to guarantee nor suggest to readers that traveling to a country for "8 weeks" or for any specific time in mind will make you fluent or more proficient in that language. The key with any goal in mind is to really apply yourself constantly.

As mentioned before, it's impressive that little kids can learn and memorize complete songs in short spands of time with constant exposure and repetition of lyrics. The same can be said with the goal of learning a language. Whether you would like to travel to a country or not to learn a language, you simply have to apply yourself.

Do You Think It Is Better To Learn A Language In School Or Not?

If you are or have considered the idea of learning a language maybe you are wondering if it better to take a language course in school or learn by yourself.
Let me start off by stating that I am not here to disuade you from the idea of taking a formal course in school to learn a language. I am all for education. However, is it really better to study in school or teach yourself? What are the benefits or disadvantages of both routes?

When you learn a language in there are many benefits. One primary benefit is that you can have a teacher explain things like grammar and phonetics to you versus guessing or trying to figure it out yourself. You learn more of the history, cultures and backgrounds of the people that speak the targeted language.

However, in my opinion there are many disadvantages of learning in school than using a self-taught method. One is that typically you have to follow the pace of the school's curriculum to learn the language. This could mean taking a course over a lapse of perhaps 4 years or more. The down side of this is that for most students who have breaks between classes due to summer or springs, tend to forget things that were learned previously. Has this ever happen to you before? I am quite sure that it has happened to everybody at some point or another with a course.

When you teach yourself, you are completely in control of the time. You can study continuously with letup which avoids the possiblity of forgeting things over time. You have the ability to learn directly and faster with natives who speak your targeted language. This is good because there are far more things that you can learn with natives than you can in school. For example, with Spanish, in school most people are taught that all Spanish people are from either Mexico or Spanish. This is obviously incorrect, yet that is what is taught so many people believe this.

However, when you learn by yourself you are exposed to various others walks of life from other Spanish-speaking countries. You can learn how other Spanish speakers speak in their respective countries. It would be like learning English here in the US versus learning it in the UK or South Africa. There are simply different expressions employed that mean the same thing. By learning these new expressions you can communicate a message more effectively to your respondent. It also makes you more proficient in the language.

When you are in school, you don't have this opportunity. The teaching is quality, yet lacking this aspect in exposing students to the ENTIRE world of Spanish speaking people and cultures. You are only taught one way of speaking so the result is that your mind and ears are fine-tuned to this way of thinking. Yet, when someone else speaks the same language and uses distinct terms you are lost or won't understand.

As you can see there are many benefits and disadvantages of learning a language in school or by yourself. There are of course many other factors that have not been covered today. Yet, the decision is yours as for which route will best suit you to learn a language. Nonetheless, learning a new language is definitely worthwild and has many long lasting benefits of doing so. So don't give up in your efforts to learn a language!

3 Reasons To Learn A Language for Bilingual Job Opportunities

More and more companies are searching earnestly for individuals that are bilingual. You can't open any newspaper, or visit some online classified site and not see atleast a few bilingual job opportunities advertised. Companies are expanding rapidly and need reliable help to keep up with this demand. Two, you could have the opportunity of perhaps potentially traveling within the company or even working from home with them. These days companies have various branches and clients all over the world. By being bilingual, companies can now use your skills to connect with clients in various geographical areas. For example, a good friend of mine to this day who works from home has had the opportunity to travel to countries like Costa Rica, Panama, and even France being her company has clients in these respective countries and she speaks the languages.

Three, learning a language for job opportunities also gives you the opportunity to build relationships with others from various other markets who can also teach you more in your field and help you gain more experience with the language in the business world.

Language Games - Why Use Language Games To Learn A Language?

Another very effective and cool way to learn a language which is quite fun are with language games.  Why use them? Well, just think about it for moment...
Everyone likes to play games of some sort. Whether it be board games or card games, they both provoke lots of participation from the parties involved. And even more so when there are competitions involved, there is even more motivation and excitment to play the game.

Well, also when you learn a language, you can also use language games. They are very effective because they employ a lot of visual and listening techniques that are not easily forgotton by learners. Interestingly, a study that images and objects are sometimes more effective in helping the brain to remember information on a longterm basis.  Games achieve this very objective. Take for instance a website called "Digitaldialects.com". This site not only gives you vocabulary, but also uses games to learn numbers, colors, foods and more.

After viewing the words with the pictures, the site will then use language games to later have you checkoff or match the pictures with their names in a random format. It will then mix them up and speed up the process to help your brain to recognize and then react faster to match them up. I think this method is very good training to not only hear but also remember the spellings of given words.

So maybe this is something that you should try out to learn a language. There are many other sites with language games on the web that you could use to learn. What I will do on the next post is mention a few more of these that you can try out.

Google Translate Review - How To Use It To Learn A Language Online Free

If you are trying to learn a language and get stuck, what can you do if you need a quick translation of a word or two? Google Translate !

Maybe you have heard of it at some point or another. Google Translate is very cool yet simple online translator for various languages.

What makes Google Translate different from any other online translator out there?
Well, what I like about this website over others is that it has audio and will read words to you in that targeted language. Audio is good obviously because if a person is trying to pronounce the word or expression it takes all of guesswork out the puzzle. That makes it easier to learn and then commit it to memory.

Somestimes when people hear my pronounciation of words or messages I send, they sometimes wonder how I learned words in their language. I have used this very online translator in the past to send or formulate messages to some speakers of Thai and Russian.

Secondly, Google Translate software also has an app that you can use for iPhones or Smartphones. So now you can translate expressions and terms on the go! That's awesome! So now you can use it when you travel abroad to communicate messages.

Just as with any online you can't expect the world from them. You must remember that a HUMAN is not rendering the translation to you at that very moment. Rather a machine or software is performing this for you. What this means is that at some given point it possible to experience some grammatical errors. To remedy this I have found that if a person enters small or single sentences versus very long and draw out paragraphs, this decreases that chance of such grammatical errors or possible punctuation marks omitted in the translation process.

All in all, I still feel that Google Translate, in comparaison with other online translators is much better in quality to learn a language. I hope that you get lots of use from it!

Should You Learn Another Language If You Already Master One?

Why fix something that doesn't need it right? Wrong!

Many feel that there is absolutely no need to learn another language nor learn about other cultures and lifestyles.  Sometimes they might feel this due to their age, geographical location and many other factors. Some say.."I already speak English, why learn another language?"..or "I'm too old to learn another language"..or "I don't think it's really worth the time". Is this really true or just an excuse?

Well the fact is that this country is every evolving and being exposed to various languages, cultures and linguistic backgrounds. The result? More diversity! This ongoing diversity opens up many new opportunities if you can really perceive them.

There are tons of benefits of learning another language.

For starters, more job opportunities. It's no secret of course what's happening with our economy. Millions have loss jobs and many stand to perhaps lose more if things that improve. Despite this current economical meltdown, many companies earnestly seek bilinguals for employment. Therefore by learning another language you will be increasing the avenues of employment available to you. Also, by being bilingual your pay and salary increases which is always a PLUS!

Secondly, you get more exposure & become part of another world to which you where once unfamiliar. Isn't great to finally understand what people are saying in conversations? What if it's about you? What if it's a funny joke that everyone is laughing at? By learning the language, now you will part of a new world to which you were exposed to before. Now you will able to also communicate and express yourself to others. How awesome that would be, right? And let's not forget about the FOOD!

The truth is that learning another language does involve investing time and lots of dedication to achieve it. But when think about it, what goal in life (big or small) does not require these two things? Precisely. If a person is really motivated in life about something, it doesn't matter if involves losing weight, improving their health, passing a test, becoming a doctor, etc, most never invent excuses of not being able to achieve it. If there is a way, they will definitely find it right? You betya!

So no matter how old you are...level of education you  possess..you CAN learn another language if you set your mind to it and no doubt will reap far benefits of doing so when you achieve it!
